INKSTER, Mich. If you drive Cherry Hill Road, plan for a little extra time. Resurfacing work on Cherry Hill between Inkster Road and Gulley Road is ongoing, and crews were back on the road this weekend.
The contractor, Proline, paved the leveling course on the outside lanes of Cherry Hill on Sunday, Oct. 25, the City of Inkster said in a Facebook notice. A leveling course is a base layer of asphalt that evens out the road before the final surface goes on.
What drivers should know
Where: Cherry Hill Road between Inkster Road and Gulley Road.
What to expect: Lane restrictions, lane shifts, changing traffic patterns, crews and equipment in the road. Traffic keeps moving, but expect delays.
When it should wrap up: Officials are targeting early November. No final completion date has been announced.
Updates: The city says it will share more notices as needed.
What the project includes
The cities of Inkster and Dearborn Heights are doing the work together with the Michigan Department of Transportation, according to the City of Inkster. Planned improvements include:
- Milling off old asphalt and resurfacing the road
- Upgraded sidewalk ramps
- Replacing selected sections of curb and gutter
- New pavement markings
The project costs about $3 million in all, shared between Inkster and Dearborn Heights, Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun told WXYZ in August. Construction began in late August.
Why it started early
The work was originally scheduled to begin in April 2027. Baydoun told WXYZ that support from Wayne County, MDOT and state Rep. Alabas Farhat allowed the cities to move it up to this fall.
The stretch drew wide attention in March, when an 18-year-old posted TikTok videos of himself filling Cherry Hill potholes with asphalt he bought at a home improvement store, WXYZ reported.
Tips for getting through
- Slow down in the work zone and watch for workers and equipment.
- Allow extra travel time, or use Michigan Avenue or Warren Avenue if you're just passing through.
- Follow posted signs. Lane patterns can change from day to day as crews move.
We'll update this story when the city announces the next phase or a completion date. Seen a problem in the work zone? Let us know.
