INKSTER, Mich. Inkster's data center decision is no longer just a local story.
This morning, the statewide news site Michigan Advance led its weekly roundup of data center news with Inkster. It placed the city alongside the state's biggest data center fights, from a giant OpenAI and Oracle project in Saline Township to East Lansing, which has put new data centers on hold.
Michigan Advance's roundup describes Inkster's outcome the same way local TV did: city officials declined to act on the permit, and with no motion to approve it, the project was effectively halted. The roundup credits WDIV Local 4 for that reporting.
Where things stand
The project: Klever Technology Center LLC wanted to turn a vacant 40,000-square-foot warehouse at 27181 Southern St., just south of Michigan Avenue, into a data center.
What happened: At the Oct. 19 council meeting, no council member made a motion to approve it, so it never came to a vote.
What the developer says: Company representative Robert Kato said the project "will now proceed in a neighboring municipality." He has not said which one.
What the developer had proposed
Klever Technology Center, based in Madison Heights, had an offer to buy the Southern Street property for $1.1 million, according to the council's Oct. 19 agenda, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The company told the city the project would bring about $75 million in private investment and 90 to 100 jobs. Those figures come from the company and have not been independently verified.
Data centers are a permitted use in that zoning district, but this one needed a special land use permit from the council. The Planning Commission recommended conditional approval on Oct. 12. A week later, residents filled City Hall, raising concerns about noise, water use, lighting and the environment. Some arrived 90 minutes before the meeting started, CBS News Detroit reported.

Why the rest of Michigan is paying attention
Inkster is not the only Michigan community pushing back. In this week's roundup, Michigan Advance also reported:
- Statewide opinion: A poll by Marketing Research Group, a Lansing firm, found 53% of Michigan voters support a statewide moratorium on data centers, with 22% opposed.
- Saline Township: As construction continues on the OpenAI and Oracle data center, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) held a public hearing on a permit that would let an onsite wastewater plant release treated water into the Saline River.
- East Lansing: The city has already approved a moratorium on data centers to give planners time to address noise and environmental concerns. A city planner said it has no current applications but has received a lot of interest.
Statewide limits have been slow to come. Bills that would put a moratorium on data centers or regulate them have stalled in the Legislature, Planet Detroit reported in September. For now, cities and townships are making these decisions one zoning request at a time, and that is how Inkster's was made.
What we're watching
Where the project goes next. Kato says it is moving to a "neighboring municipality." If it lands in Dearborn Heights, Westland, Wayne, Romulus or Taylor, Inkster residents near the border could still live with its effects. We have asked which city, and we will report it when we know.
Whether Inkster changes its rules. Because no motion was made, Inkster's zoning rules haven't changed. A data center is still a permitted use on that property with a special land use permit, so another developer could apply. Some Michigan cities have answered that with a temporary moratorium while they write new rules. Inkster has not taken that step. If you think it should, the place to say so is public comment at a City Council meeting.
Where each council member stands. With no vote, there is no public record of how each member felt about the project. We plan to ask them.
